It looks like the UFC’s “Funkiest” fighter might be back inside the octagon within the year. According to a tweet from Ariel Helwani, Ben Askren is in talks to face MMA legend Demian Maia once his medical suspension ends this September.
Askren enters the fight off of the first loss of his career against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239. In addition to being the new fastest knockout in UFC history, the devastating nature of the loss threw Askren’s MMA future into question until he stated otherwise in an interview with Helwani.
Maia conversely enters the match off of a unanimous decision victory against Anthony Rocco Martin this past June. Ironically, Maia also holds a split decision win over Masvidal from UFC 211.
