IBJJF Champion Gabi Garcia is set to make an attempt at extending her undefeated MMA streak to 6-0 next month when she takes on Russian Hand-To-Hand Combat Champion Veronika Futina.
This time Garcia won’t be fighting for Rizin, though. Instead she’ll be fighting for the Korean mixed martial arts promotion Road FC.
The match will go down in Beijing, China, marking the first time Garcia fights professionally outside of Japan.
Though undefeated in MMA, Gabi Garcia’s last two scheduled fights did more to hurt her MMA career than help it. Her match against Oksana Gagloeva in July of last year was stopped in only 16 seconds after Garcia poked her in the eye.
Gabi’s last scheduled match, against Shinobu Kandori, was PR disaster. Not only was the 32-year-old Garcia (who stands 6’2″ and weighs over 230 pounds) widely criticized for fighting a woman 20 years her senior, but Gabi missed weight by 25 pounds. Rizin later scrapped the match.
Veronika Futina will be making her MMA debut when she takes on Gabi at Road FC. Sherdog does not list her age, but at 5’11” and 202 pounds, she will no doubt be a better match up for Garcia than Kandori. According to ROAD FC’s website, Futina is a four-time Russia Champion and two-time World Champion in Hand-To-Hand Combat. She has studied martial arts — including both judo and boxing — since childhood.
Veronika Futina and Gabi Garcia will met at ROAD FC 47, scheduled to go down on May 12 from Beijing’s Cadillac Arena. The match will be an Openweight bout. No news yet as to where and if the match will be streamed so audiences outside of Beijing can watch it.
