Mikey Musumeci is no stranger to a challenge, and he’s ready to prove it at the IBJJF Pan-American Championships this year. The athlete revealed in a social media post that he’s signed up for the heavyweight division at Pans with the intention of closing out the division with teammate Roberto Jimenez.
“HEAVY WEIGHT FOR PANS // I am super excited to be competing at the pans in 2 weeks! I decided I will be competing in the Heavy weight division!! My goal is to help my teammate @robertojimenezbjj win his first pans title and we close out the division together!! Let’s do this!! “
The news is only somewhat surprising. Musumeci traditionally competes between 57 and 70kg, but he’s been known to push himself in the upper weight divisions as well. He competed in the open weight division at Euros, losing only by an advantage to Mahamed Aly in the quarter-finals. Earlier this month, he also confirmed a match with Erberth Santos at FloGrappling’s Who’s Number One event following Caio Terra’s $10,000 challenge.
The fate of this year’s Pans is currently still hanging in the balance due to concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The University of California, Irvine (where Pans is hosted) has suspended all activities involving more than 100 people. The IBJJF hasn’t canceled the tournament at the time of this post’s publication, but they’re offering to refund participants’ fees if they decide to withdraw by March 13. The organization has stated that they will release an update tomorrow at noon, PDT.
