August is going to be hot — and we’re not just talking about the weather. The sub-only scene is going to bear witness to yet another exciting Sapateiro event in Brandenton, Florida featuring a 205-lb 16-man bracket. But if that’s not enough to convince you to check it out, consider this: EBI veteran Marcelo Cohen and five-time Sapateiro veteran Spencer Mumme will be the main event for this show. And they’ll have all the time they need to get a submission.
Both of these competitors are small and speedy; they’ll be competing at 135 lbs. Mumme, a Robby Donofrio brown belt, actually just competed at Sapateiro 9 at the beginning of June, and he decided to push this match to happen by calling out Cohen for a no-gi fight. Even though Cohen has been successful competing no-gi, having earned the title of black belt no-gi Pans champion, he only agreed to fight Mumme in the gi. Their bout will have no time limit and allow for all submissions.
“I’m super excited to bring the Sapateiro Invitational back to its birthplace of Bradenton Florida. This is the first time we are running the 205lb division and I know there is a ton of great talent out there so I expectt a great turnout and performance from everyone,” says promoter Josh Leduc.
The bracket is still being built, so if you think you have what it takes to be a 205-lb Sapateiro champion, message the Sapateiro page on Facebook. If you win, you’ll get a cash prize, automatic entry into the open weight tournament at the end of the year, and the chance to compete in future Sapateiro superfights.
Make sure you check out all the action by watching the event stream live for free on August 12 on the Sapateiro Facebook page. Or, if you’re in the area, show up in person and give the competitors some support. Tickets are just $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and if the previous Sapateiro events are any indication of what’s to come, you’ll get as much sub-only action as you can handle.
